GIMP vs PhotoImpact?
No one probably uses PhotoImpact instead of PhotoShop like me, but I thought I'd ask. I'm on version 7 of PI and I'm looking at GIMP since my version of PI is so old and GIMP is supposed to be more like PhotoShop (which would be good because then I could probably use PS if I had to.
Anyway, PI lets me create a variety of shapes with custom colors, reflections, bevels, borders, and materials (so very good for creating various objects for use in graphic art and web design). I can control size, transparency, and soft edges very easily. Cropping and resizing is cake as I can just click and object and drag its borders. I can also tilt and bend it to make it look distorted or change its orientation to look like it's lying down, or turned a different direction.
So. What would GIMP do for me?
How is it with graph tablets? Sample work I've done with PI here:

If you find yourself comfortable with PhotoImpact why not stick with it?
I tried GIMP for one day and found it very different than Photoshop. Of course, that was just one day, and I use Photoshop on a daily basis for specific retouching/color-correction and prepress work.
I would say get the 30-day trial of Photoshop Elements. Play around with that for a while. It costs about the same as PhotoImpact.
I hear a lot of good things about GIMP, though. It never hurts to try a free program.
