Got a funky message I've never seen before on my laptop. It's a Macintosh Powerbook G4. Whaaaat's going on?
Got a message in an opaque grey box, that says, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button."
Says it in I think it was 4 langauges. In the background of the box, it had the power button big in the square. I'm at work on a PC now. My laptop was sitting next to me, I ejected my iPod, waited until the icon was gone, then disconnected it about a minute after the icon was gone... What the hell happened???

Your computer had a kernel panic.
Kernel panics can have several causes:
Defective or incompatible RAM. Incompatible, obsolete, or corrupted extensions (kext) or drivers. Hard disk corruption, including bad sectors, or directory corruption. Incorrect permissions on system-related files or folders... among other things.
First try repairing permissions using Disk Utility. Also start the computer from the installation disk or an external drive and run disk verification and repair. If the problem persists, you may need to run Disk Warrior, or troubleshoot by removing or updating programs and drivers.
If it's a one-time occurrence, don't worry too much. Just run your basic maintenance routine and you should be fine.
