I am tiling a bathroom countertop--if I use non-sanded grout will I need 2 coats?
I read on one website that it will shrink, and will require two applications of grout. Is this true? And if it is, do I wait for the grout to dry completely between coats or what?
Once your tiles are set, ( 24 hours ) make sure the Grout lines are clean and free of any mortar.
If the grout space between tiles is 1/4" or more, you should use Sanded Grout, If the spacing of the tiles is like 1/8" use Non-Sanded Grout. Mix the grout as recommended by the Manufacturer, it should be real thick ? With your Rubber Float push the grout into the spaces, takes some doing, the grout should be level to the tile grooves, There should be no reason to apply a second Grouting, let the grout dry ( 24 Hours ) Take some white Vinegar and water on a clean sponge and clean the tiles of excess grout. Let it all dry the apply a PENETRATING grout sealer.
The reason some people have problems with separation is, A) They added Water to the Grout mix and it became thin , and once the water evaporated it shrunk a bit leaving a space. DO NOT ADD water once you have mixed your Grout.
Another B) is that they did not allow the alloted time for curing or drying before cleaning and sealing.
