Proper rabbit diet and housing?
Hi all.
I have a year-old long-eared bunny. I keep her in a 5ft x 5ft x 3ft high pen that my husband made. The bottom is made of plywood and the sides are made with "chicken wire" fencing. I use either cedar or pine bedding which gets changed once every 2 weeks or so. (I would change it more, but because the pen is so large, it gets kinda pricey!)
I feed her a basic bunny pellet diet (about 2 cups per day) along with vegetable scraps, which include lettuce, cabbage, carrots, beets, assorted greens, melons, apples, green peppers, etc. And water, of course.
The reason I'm asking this question is because I've found a lot of conflicting information online about what is healthy for rabbits. So I'm kind of just in need of personal opinion from rabbit owners! Thanks

Okay well, the first and most important thing is to NOT use Cedar shavings anymore, ever. These can cause serious respiratory problems in small animals. Definitely stop using that. Aspen is much better. With pine, make sure it is kiln-dried as pine can harm small animals as well if it isn't.
Cleaning the cage that infrequently can be OK if it's very large and doesn't smell awful, but if it's bad you really should change it more as the ammonia can hurt your bunny. But usually very large pens can go a bit longer without a changing.
You should start feeding your bunny Timothy hay, as well. That's also really important. It's one of the most important parts of the rabbit's diet.
Also, I'd hold off on the cabbage and beets as that can give your rabbit too much gas and bloating.
Here's a list of the best veggies for rabbits: arugula, basil, beet greens, bok choy, Boston lettuce, Chinese broccoli, cilantro, dill, escarole, fennel (anise), flat parsley, kohl rabi tops, lovage, lemon balm, mint (any variety but Pennyroyal which is toxic), mizuna, mustard greens, oregano, parsnips, radishes and tops, romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, rapini, snow peas, sweet green peppers, and thyme.
If you're feeding Timothy hay and veggies daily, you don't really need that large an amount of pellets. How much does your rabbit weigh?
Here's a general gauge for the amount of pellets per rabbit based on weight: 2-4 pounds, 1/8 cup daily; 5-7 pounds, 1/4 cup daily; 8-10 pounds, 1/2 cup daily; 10-15 pounds, 1/2 cup daily.
